Victoria to ban single-use plastics including straws, cutlery and plates by 2023




Victoria will ban certain single-use plastics by 2023 in a bid to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

Plastic straws, cutlery, plates, drink stirrers, polystyrene food and drink containers, and plastic cotton bud sticks are the specific items getting phased out, the state government announced today.

Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the government was focusing on those particular single-use items because there were alternatives available.

“This is about taking a gradual step towards addressing plastics in our environment,” she said.

“We believe that these are the easiest items that have substitutes available right now.”
